The dining room received a splash of color! Behold, a teal accent wall, just as I promised. I went with Ralph Lauren’s Blue Lagoon. It came out darker than anticipated…and greener. But I’m glad it did because there’s a lot of blue in the room and the greener hue keeps it from looking too matchy-matchy.

As you can see, there’s also a new rug! I’ve been searching for the Nate Berkus chevron rug for a while now. It’s no longer available on HSN and seemed impossible to find elsewhere. Somehow, I got lucky last week and spotted a 8′x10′ version randomly on eCrater. The best part – it was $100 cheaper than the HSN price and brand new!

Living room + dining room combo, looking spiffy.
Just for fun, here’s a photo of the dining room as staged by the previous owner. Sorry for the poor quality, I grabbed it from the real estate listing of our house.

A picture’s worth a thousand words…let’s just say we’ve come a long way.

Are you wondering why the cat is in every photo? It’s because she fell madly in love with the new rug, instantly. She kept rolling on it and scratching it. Hasn’t she heard of playing hard to get? Geesh.

/ May 27, 2011YAY I take it the dining room makeover is now complete? It’s come a long way with only a few changes! (btw the decor from the previous owner is disturbing).
I’m itching to re-paint the living/dining room areas but have no idea what color I’d do and it’s also a big job.
Envious of your rug, I’ve been searching for a cute yet affordable rug for AGES.

/ May 27, 2011Finally complete…for now!
Yeah it was pretty bad. It took some vision to look past the ugly decor when I went to the first open house! Thankfully, once the ugly furniture was removed, the house was pretty much a blank canvas.
What kind of rug are you looking for? Cheap ones that don’t look like vomit are hard to come by, unfortunately. Have you tried rugsusa.com? Or just Ikea?

/ May 29, 2011I think the room looks wonderful, but thought you were a little harsh by your statement ” we’ve come a long way” regarding the previous owner’s decor style. Although not my style, it looks like it was certainly in style at some point. It actually had a style ( unlike the many out there who don’t, but are a giant mish mash)
It makes me wonder if in 10 years or so all these blue/gray walls, and geometric patterned fabrics will feel just as dated and unlovable as we are about past designs.

/ June 6, 2011Glad you like the room! I think you have a good point. If I’m of a different background and age group, I might think that the original owner’s decor isn’t that bad. I think my main issue was that it looks like they decorated in the 90s and hadn’t updated it since, even though I purchased the house in 2009. I’m sure in 10 years, chevron prints and bold accent walls may be out of style but then again, I will certainly have updated my decor according to my evolving taste and general design trends by then. They definitely put a lot of thought and care into the house, which I appreciate.

/ September 20, 2011I love what you have done to this room! I came here just to look at the goreous lamp lit (it will improve any gray day for me), but found this entire amazing room. background blue is beautiful, rug fits perfect. and i would totally agree you’ve come a long way…
